The Canary V Balearic Islands

Spainâ€™s two archipelagos located to the east and west of the country couldnâ€™t be further apart when it comes to climate, culture, landscape and real estate.

The Canary Islands offer year round sunshine and warmth, surreal volcanic/desert landscapes along with lush green forests surrounded by warm Atlantic waters. The Balearics on the other hand, offer rugged Mediterranean beauty, a colder climate, many tourist hotspots and a legendary club scene on the, once infamous, Ibiza.

The Canary Islands
Most of the Canary Islands are as well-know as their eastern counterparts, especially Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Located in the Atlantic, off the northwest coast of Africa, close to the equator, theyâ€™re the only real winter sun destination in Europe.

Throughout the archipelago, youâ€™ll find vast sandy beaches (some of the best in Europe) along with many beautiful reefs, capes and bays. There are also numerous black volcanic sand beaches that are perhaps not as visually appealing but nonetheless very popular.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the most developed of the Canary Islands and have had a large expat community of Brits for many years. Nowadays, youâ€™ll find growing numbers of Germans coming here both on holidays and to invest in property.

Lanzarote, known for itâ€™s strange Martian-like landscape, is becoming increasingly popular with investors. The local government has made sure that all new homes are built to a standard higher than is usually found in Spain. There are also restrictions on the number of properties that can be built, in order to preserve this spectacular natural landscape. Palma - the capital of Mallorca is famous for its many stunning beaches (almost 80 in total) and beautiful sea. The old town comprises a lovely historic quarter and has a pumping nightlife - which can be an attraction or a deterrent, depending on your mood (or age).

Ibizaâ€™s most popular tourist spots are San Antonia and Ibiza town, both of which are famous for their manic club scenes, decadent lifestyles and world-renowned international DJs.

After the intense clubbing frenzy of the summer months, the island takes a well-earned breather. Ibiza in winter is a paradise for anyone looking to get away from it all and relax in the bright winter sun. Over the years Ibiza has become a very popular gay destination.

The Balearics have been a well-established property investment location for many years, particularly with the British. Theyâ€™re an enclave for wealthy British and Spanish homebuyers; where youâ€™ll find some of the most extravagant villas - some of which run into the millions.

On the Canaries, prices are much more realistic. Apartments start at as little as â‚¬90,000 and you can get a small detached property for around â‚¬240,000. Year-round warmth and sunshine make the Canary Islands a very popular buy-to-let investment option.
